Origin Energy: how to leave, exit fees, price changes, moving house and complaints

Leaving Origin: 10-business-day cooling-off, which plans carry an exit fee, 3 business days' notice to move, price rise notice periods by state, and complaints.

Origin Energy Electricity Ltd (ABN 33 071 052 287) sells electricity, and Origin Energy Retail Ltd or Origin Energy LPG Ltd sells natural gas depending on the state; all are part of Origin Energy Limited, with the NSW retail entity registered at Tower 1, 100 Barangaroo Avenue, Sydney. Origin supplies households in the ACT, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. This page is based on the Agreement Terms for market retail contracts dated October 2026, the customer disclosure statement, and Origin’s moving and complaints pages.

How to leave Origin Energy

Sign up with the new retailer and it does the rest. Clause 17 of the Agreement Terms says the agreement ends when your supply address transfers to another retailer. The changeover happens at your next meter read and Origin sends a final bill.

If nobody will use the property, ask Origin to disconnect instead, in My Account, the Origin app or on 13 24 61. The agreement then ends 10 business days after disconnection. A distributor fee for the disconnection or final read appears on the last bill.

New to Origin and having second thoughts? The cooling-off period is 10 business days, starting the later of the day after you accepted or the day you received the agreement and disclosure statement. The disclosure statement gives three ways to cancel: the enclosed form by fax or Reply Paid 1199, Adelaide SA 5001, a call to 13 24 61, or an email to hello@origin.com.au.

Contract terms and exit fees

There is no notice period to leave; the agreement ends on transfer.

Exit fees depend on the plan. The Agreement Terms list an exit fee among the fees that “for some Energy Plans” may apply for ending early, and the disclosure statement says the amount is set out in your Details section. Your own plan documents are the only reliable source.

When a plan with a set period ends, what happens depends on where you live. In Victoria a fixed-term plan makes the whole agreement a fixed-term agreement, and Origin says it will get in touch one or two months before it ends. Everywhere else the agreement carries on without the plan, or Origin offers to extend it or move you to a new plan; if you do not decline within the time stated in the notice, Origin treats that as acceptance. Energy Made Easy says the national rules require 20 to 40 business days’ notice before a benefit ends or changes. Our guide Benefit period ending or price change notice explains how to read the letter.

Price changes: your rights

Before an increase to your charges, or a cut to a feed-in tariff, Origin gives small customers at least 20 business days’ notice on a Fixed Price Energy Plan in NSW, SA, Queensland and the ACT; at least 5 business days in Victoria and on other plans in NSW, SA and the ACT; and at least 10 business days on other plans in Queensland.

In NSW, Queensland, SA and the ACT, Origin says it can generally increase a charge only once a year, in July, or at the end of the plan period on a Fixed Price plan. A Fixed Price plan is not varied otherwise, except where the information behind the price was wrong, the meter changes from an accumulation to an interval meter, or the distributor changes the network tariff for your address.

Moving house

Give Origin at least 3 business days’ notice of your move-out date and a forwarding address for the final bill. The agreement, including the Energy Plan, ends on the day you move. Moving does not disconnect the old address by itself: Origin’s moving page says to book the disconnection in My Account or the app, and that the distributor can disconnect from 7am on the chosen day, so choose a date after you have left.

Distributor connection and disconnection fees are passed through on your bills, and you pick a plan for the new address. Our guide Moving house: connecting electricity and gas covers what to do if you move in before you have signed up.

Contact and complaints

Electricity and gas customers: 13 24 61, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm AEST; the general enquiries form on originenergy.com.au; or post to GPO Box 1199, Adelaide SA 5001. The moving team is on 13 66 83 and an interpreter on 1300 137 427.

Origin’s complaints page promises a reply within five business days and a timeframe for resolution. If the first answer does not help, ask for a team leader. After that you can go to the energy ombudsman in your state, listed in Origin’s disclosure statement: NSW 1800 246 545, Victoria 1800 500 509, ACT (02) 6207 1740, SA 1800 665 565, Queensland 1800 662 837.

What to check before you switch

Open your welcome email or My Account and look at the Details section: the plan end date, any exit fee, any benefit that depends on staying, and whether your price is fixed and until when. Our bill explainer shows where these items sit on a bill.

Then compare plans for your address in the Australian energy comparison, or on Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare. The contract reminder can prompt you before the plan end date, when the 20 to 40 business day notice window opens.

SituationWhat to do
Switching to another retailerSign up with the new retailer. Origin's agreement ends when your address transfers to the other retailer (Agreement Terms, clause 17). You receive a final bill after the closing meter read.
Plan with an exit fee or a conditional benefitThe terms allow an exit fee on some Energy Plans; the amount, if any, is in your Details section. If you leave before you become entitled to a benefit such as an account credit, you do not receive it (clause 7).
Price riseOrigin must give notice before an increase: at least 20 business days on a Fixed Price plan in NSW, SA, Queensland and the ACT, 5 business days in Victoria and on other plans in NSW, SA and the ACT, 10 business days on other plans in Queensland (clause 9). You can switch away before the new price starts.
Moving houseGive at least 3 business days' notice and a forwarding address. The agreement, including any Energy Plan, ends on the day you move (clause 19). Book the disconnection in My Account or the app; it does not happen automatically.
Cooling-off after signing up10 business days from the later of the day after you accepted or the day you received the agreement and disclosure statement. Cancel by calling 13 24 61, emailing hello@origin.com.au or returning the cancellation form (clause 4).

General rules under national law; the exact notice period and any fees are in your contract and the supplier's terms. The simplest route is to let the new supplier handle the cancellation.

Pros

  • The Agreement Terms spell out the price change notice periods by state and plan type, and say Fixed Price plans are not varied except for incorrect information or a meter change
  • No notice period to leave: the agreement ends on transfer, or 10 business days after a requested disconnection
  • A published complaints procedure with a five-business-day response promise and a team leader escalation step

Cons

  • Whether your plan carries an exit fee is only visible in your Details section and Energy Plan terms, not in the general terms
  • Outside Victoria, when a plan ends the agreement simply continues without the plan unless you act, and Origin may treat silence after an extension offer as acceptance

Frequently asked questions

Does Origin Energy charge an exit fee?
Only on some plans. The Agreement Terms (October 2026) list an exit fee as a fee that may apply on some Energy Plans for ending early, and the customer disclosure statement says the amount is set out in your Details section. Nothing is charged for leaving within the 10-business-day cooling-off period. Check your welcome documents or My Account for your plan.
How do I cancel Origin Energy?
To switch, sign up with another retailer and it handles the transfer; Origin's agreement ends when your address moves across. To stop supply altogether, request a disconnection through My Account, the Origin app or 13 24 61; the agreement ends 10 business days after the disconnection and Origin sends a final bill.
What happens when my Origin plan ends?
Outside Victoria the agreement continues without the plan's benefits unless you take a new plan. Origin may offer an extension or a new plan, and if you do not decline within the time stated in the notice it treats that as acceptance. In Victoria a fixed-term plan ends the agreement, and Origin says it gets in touch one or two months beforehand. Energy Made Easy says the notice must arrive 20 to 40 business days before a benefit ends.
Can Origin raise prices on a fixed price plan?
The terms say a Fixed Price Energy Plan is not varied except where the information used to set the price was wrong, the meter changes from accumulation to interval, or the distributor changes the network tariff. In NSW, Queensland, SA and the ACT increases on other plans are generally limited to once a year in July.
How do I complain to Origin Energy?
Call 13 24 61 (Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm AEST), use the general enquiries form, or write to GPO Box 1199, Adelaide SA 5001. Origin promises a reply within five business days and you can ask for a team leader. If it stays unresolved, contact the energy ombudsman in your state, free of charge.
How much notice does Origin need when I move out?
At least 3 business days, plus a forwarding address for the final bill. Origin's moving page says meters can be disconnected from 7am on the chosen day, so pick a date after you have left. Distributor fees for the final read or disconnection appear on the final bill.
