Leaving Ecotricity: exit fees, fixed tariff ending, price rises, moving home and contact
Leaving Ecotricity: no fee on Green Variable, published exit fees on 1 and 2 Year Fixed, none in the last 49 days or on a home move, two days' notice when moving.
Ecotricity Limited supplies electricity and gas to households across Great Britain from Lion House in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Dale Vince founded the company and it delivered green electricity from local landfill gas to its first customer on 1 April 1996. Today it sells a Green Variable tariff, 1 Year and 2 Year Fixed tariffs, an EV tariff and pay-as-you-go. This page is based on Ecotricity’s domestic terms and conditions, the principal terms of its tariffs, its tariff, moving-home and complaints pages, and Ofgem’s rules. Fees change with each new tariff version, so check the principal terms for the one you are on.
How to leave Ecotricity
The terms say you may end your contract at any time as long as you have paid any outstanding balance and your supply is switched to another supplier or disconnected. In practice you sign up with the new supplier, which notifies Ecotricity; the Green Variable principal terms say the transfer should take no more than five working days, and Ofgem gives you 14 days to cancel the new contract if you change your mind. Ecotricity then issues a final bill from your closing reading.
Two things to watch. A balance owed for more than 28 days lets a supplier object to the switch, so settle it first. And on a fixed tariff, leaving more than 49 days before the end of the fixed period triggers the exit fee described below. The variable tariff has no fee, no notice period and no penalty.
Notice period and fixed tariffs
Ecotricity publishes its exit fees on the tariff page. For tariffs on sale in October 2026: the 1 Year Fixed carries £71.43 for electricity only, £75 for gas only or £146.43 for dual fuel; the 2 Year Fixed £95.24, £100 or £195.24. The principal terms confirm the fee is not charged within the 49-day renewal window, when you transfer the tariff to a new property, or when a change of metering (an EV tariff or Economy 7, for example) requires a different tariff. You can cancel within 14 days of entering a fixed contract without charge.
Ecotricity says it writes at least six weeks before the end of a fixed tariff with your options, which lines up with Ofgem’s rule that the end-of-contract notice arrives 42 to 49 days before the end date and that no termination fee can be charged after it. Take no action and you move to the variable tariff: the principal terms call it the Out of Contract tariff, protected by the price cap, with no fixed term. What that step means for your bill is set out in Fixed energy tariff ending.
Price rises: your rights
On a fixed tariff the principal terms say the contract will not change until the end date except in specific cases, including government taxes such as increases or decreases in VAT. On Green Variable, Ecotricity commits to advance notice of any change to your charges and to explaining why; Ofgem’s licence conditions set the minimum at 30 days. The terms then give you the exit: if you reject the change, it will not apply as long as Ecotricity receives notice from another supplier that you are switching to them within 20 working days.
Moving home
Tell Ecotricity at least two working days before you move. On the day it asks for a final meter reading and a forwarding address; if you do not get in touch you may remain responsible for energy used at the property. Its moving-home page lists what to have ready: the full address, the tenancy end or completion date, a final reading taken on the day or within four days, the landlord or agent’s name if applicable and the new occupant’s name if known. Contact movinghome@ecotricity.co.uk, call 0345 555 7500 or use your online account. Taking Ecotricity with you means no exit fee on a fixed tariff. Our wider checklist is in Moving house: what to do about your energy supplier.
Contact and complaints
Customer service is on 0345 555 7100 (01453 761482 from abroad), Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and weekends 9am to 5pm, or home@ecotricity.co.uk with an average email response of two working days. Ecotricity’s complaints route is the same phone number, complaints@ecotricity.co.uk, or post to FAO Complaints, Freepost ECOTRICITY. It describes four steps: the first response, an internal review on request, the eight-week point, and a sign-posting letter when it cannot resolve the matter. After eight weeks, or on receiving that letter, you can take the case free of charge to the Energy Ombudsman (0330 440 1624, enquiry@energyombudsman.org) within 12 months; its decision binds Ecotricity once you accept it. Citizens Advice consumer service gives free advice on 0808 223 1133.
What to check before you switch
Find your tariff name and end date in your online account and match them to the principal terms on Ecotricity’s website; that tells you whether a fee applies today. Clear any balance older than 28 days, note your annual kWh from the last bill (our bill explainer shows where) and compare on the UK energy comparison. The steps are in How to switch energy supplier, and the contract end reminder will flag the next 49-day window.
Cancelling your contract with Ecotricity
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Green Variable tariff | No fixed term, no notice and no exit fee. Leave at any time once any outstanding balance is paid; the switch takes up to five working days. |
| 1 Year Fixed or 2 Year Fixed, more than 49 days before the end | Exit fees apply. As published in October 2026: 1 Year Fixed £71.43 electricity, £75 gas, £146.43 dual fuel; 2 Year Fixed £95.24, £100 and £195.24. Check your own tariff's principal terms. |
| Last 49 days of a fixed tariff | No exit fee. Ecotricity writes at least six weeks before the end; take no action and you move to its variable, price-capped tariff. |
| Price rise or change to terms | Fixed prices do not change during the term except for government taxes such as VAT. On the variable tariff Ecotricity gives advance notice (30 days under Ofgem rules); the change does not apply if another supplier notifies your switch within 20 working days. |
| Moving home | Tell Ecotricity at least two working days before the move with a final reading and forwarding address. Take Ecotricity to the new address and no exit fee applies. |
General rules under national law; the exact notice period and any fees are in your contract and the supplier's terms. The simplest route is to let the new supplier handle the cancellation.
Pros
- Exit fees are published per tariff on the website, not hidden in an account portal
- Variable tariff can be left at any time without notice or penalty
- Dedicated moving-home email (movinghome@ecotricity.co.uk) and seven-day phone hours
Cons
- Exit fees on the 2 Year Fixed are among the higher ones on the market, up to £195.24 dual fuel
- Gas is largely fossil gas; Ecotricity itself says only about 1 % comes from green gasmills
