Leaving ScottishPower: exit fees, fixed tariff ending, price rises and moving home
Leaving ScottishPower: £50 per fuel exit fee on fixed tariffs, none in the last 49 days or on a home move, end of fix, price rise rights, contact and complaints.
ScottishPower Energy Retail Limited (company number SC190287) is the domestic supply arm of the ScottishPower Group, a subsidiary of Scottish Power Retail Holdings Limited, and sells gas and electricity to households across Great Britain. This page is based on the terms of its Green Fixed Sep 2027 tariff (dated August 2026), the Citizens Advice supplier data for April to June 2026 and Ofgem’s licence rules. The exact fee and end date for your own tariff are in your tariff confirmation letter and Tariff Information Label, so check those alongside what follows.
How to leave ScottishPower
You do not need to cancel with ScottishPower yourself. Pick a new deal, sign up with the new supplier, and it tells ScottishPower you are leaving. Ofgem requires the switch to complete within five working days, and you have 14 days to change your mind after agreeing the new contract. ScottishPower then sends a final bill based on the reading you give on switch day, and refunds any credit.
Two things can hold a switch up. If you have owed money for more than 28 days, ScottishPower may object until it is paid (prepayment customers can move debts of up to £500 to the new supplier). And if you are on a fixed tariff with more than 49 days to run, an exit fee is added to the final bill.
Notice period and fixed tariffs
The tariff terms are explicit. Clause 8 of the Green Fixed Sep 2027 terms: if you switch to another supplier and the transfer fully completes more than 49 days before the end date, exit fees of £50 per fuel apply. Other ScottishPower fixed deals may carry a different figure, so read your own terms. Two exceptions are written in: no fee if the tariff ends because of a home move, and no fee for moving to another ScottishPower tariff at any point.
Towards the end of the fix, clause 10 applies. ScottishPower writes to you before the end date, and unless you choose another option it moves you to another of its tariffs on the same payment method, with the new prices set out in that letter. You also have the option to cancel without paying exit fees. This matches Ofgem’s rules: suppliers must send the end-of-contract notice 42 to 49 days before the end date, cannot charge a termination fee from that point, and cannot roll you onto a new fixed term without your agreement. What happens next is explained in the guide Fixed energy tariff ending.
Price rises: your rights
On a fixed tariff, the price is guaranteed until the end date. Clause 6 allows a change only where a governmental, statutory or licensing authority forces one (a VAT change, for example), with reasonable written notice.
On a variable tariff, Ofgem’s standard licence conditions 23 and 24 apply. ScottishPower must give 30 days’ notice of a price increase. If, within that notice period, it receives notice that another supplier is taking over your supply, it must not apply the higher charges to you and must not charge a termination fee, even if the switch itself completes after the rise.
Moving home
Tell ScottishPower before you move, with the move-out date, a final meter reading taken on the day and a forwarding address for the final bill. Clause 12 of the fixed tariff terms says the tariff cannot be transferred to another property, but you can apply for any tariff that is on sale when you move. Clause 8 confirms that no exit fee is applied when a fixed tariff is cancelled because of a home move. At the new address you are on the existing supplier’s deemed tariff until you choose; the practical steps are in Moving house: what to do about your energy supplier.
Contact and complaints
Citizens Advice lists ScottishPower’s customer line as 0345 270 0700, email contactus@scottishpower.com, plus web chat. Pay monthly customers can call Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm; prepayment customers Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. In the April to June 2026 Citizens Advice ratings ScottishPower scored 2.76 out of 5, twelfth of sixteen suppliers.
For a complaint, say clearly what you want done and keep copies of bills and readings. Ofgem gives the supplier eight weeks to resolve it. After that, or as soon as you receive a deadlock letter, you can take it free of charge to the Energy Ombudsman (0330 440 1624, enquiry@energyombudsman.org) within 12 months. The Ombudsman’s decision binds ScottishPower once you accept it. Free advice along the way: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 (England and Wales) or Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 196 8660.
What to check before you switch
Find the end date of your fix in your tariff confirmation letter or online account. More than 49 days to go means a £50 per fuel fee on the tariffs we checked; inside that window the switch is free. Note your annual usage in kWh from the last bill (our bill explainer shows where) and clear any balance older than 28 days. Then compare on the UK energy comparison, follow the steps in How to switch energy supplier, and let the contract end reminder tell you when the next 49-day window opens.
Cancelling your contract with ScottishPower
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Switching away from a fixed tariff more than 49 days before its end date | Exit fees apply. On the Green Fixed Sep 2027 terms they are £50 per fuel. The figure for your own tariff is in its terms and on your Tariff Information Label. |
| Switching in the last 49 days of a fixed tariff, or after it ends | No exit fee. ScottishPower writes to you before the end date; under Ofgem rules the fee cannot be charged once that notice window begins. |
| On a standard variable tariff | No fixed term and no exit fee. Your new supplier handles the switch, normally within five working days. |
| Price rise on a variable tariff | ScottishPower must give 30 days' notice. Tell it (or let your new supplier tell it) that you are switching before the rise takes effect and the higher price and any exit fee cannot be applied. |
| Moving home | No exit fee when a fixed tariff ends because of a home move. The tariff itself cannot be transferred to the new address, but you can apply for any tariff on sale. |
General rules under national law; the exact notice period and any fees are in your contract and the supplier's terms. The simplest route is to let the new supplier handle the cancellation.
